1. Flohmarkt Spandau
Although the town of Spandau was swallowed up by the neighbouring big city many years ago, this pleasant suburb has managed to retain its provincial charm. One of the most charming things about the flea market is the prices, which are very reasonable in comparison to what you will find in other parts of Berlin. Why not combine a bit of bargain-hunting with a visit to the historic Zitadelle or Nikolai Church in Spandau's old town?

2. Flohmarkt am Rathaus Schöneberg
Until recently located on Fehrbelliner Platz, this traditional flea market now takes place on John Kennedy Platz, underneath the awesome Schöneberg Town Hall. Hundreds of stalls offer the usual selection of clothes, books, jewellery, antiques and household articles. As is always the case with flea markets, the name of the game is trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, and if you've got a good eye, you may be able to get yourself a real bargain.
Address: John-F.-Kennedy-Platz Schöneberg Berlin 10825
Opening hours: 9am-4pm Sat & Sun

3. Hallentrödelmarkt Treptow
The run-down factory buildings next to the shiny new Treptowers at Osthafen are all slowly being restored. Two of the huge warehouses awaiting restoration have now been turned into a provisional flea market. Bargain-hunters flock here every weekend to scavenge through piles of old clothes, books, electrical devices and furniture. Who knows, maybe the Turkish or Eastern European tradesman won't know that it's a real Chippendale table or an original Ming vase. But you probably won't know either!

Opening hours: 10am-4pm Sat & Sun
Neighbourhood: Treptow
Nearest train: S-Bahn: Treptower Park (S4, S6, S8, S9, S45)
4. Trödel- und Kunstmarkt Straße des 17. Juni
Berlin's oldest flea market has become increasingly popular over the years, and prices have risen accordingly. However, if you are any good at haggling, you may be able to find a nice memento to take home with you at a halfway decent price. Most vendors are professional collectors and many stalls offer genuine antiques and real rarities. The range of goods on offer includes pretty much everything under the sun - with books, records, clothes, crockery, furniture, toys, East German nostalgia and Berlin memorabilia. The market stretches from Ernst-Reuter-Platz to Tiergarten S-Bahn station.

5. Wochenmarkt am Wittenbergplatz
This market is one of the few which are held in the very centre of town, in this case on Wittenbergplatz opposite KaDeWe department store. The range of produce is maybe not as broad as elsewhere, but the quality is hard to beat. The market mostly caters to tourists heading down the Ku'damm and workers from the nearby shops and offices.

Antiquariat Wiederhold & Mink
Not many visitors to Berlin make it to Ackerstraße. Some may venture to the nearby Schoko-Laden and Elisabeth Church on Invalidenstraße, yet this small street lined with charming turn-of-the-century houses exudes that old-world atmosphere which is hard to find in modern-day Berlin. Wiederhold & Mink's second-hand bookstore is a perfect match for this environment, with shelves full of dusty copies of long-forgotten literature. The works are organised according to category: mostly paperback novels, but also a good selection of dictionaries from Britain, France, Italy and Eastern Europe.
Address: Ackerstraße 18 Mitte Berlin 10115
Opening hours: 11am-6.30pm Mon-Fri; 10am-4pm Sat
Telephone: +49 30 280 74 08
Neighbourhood: Mitte
Nearest train: Rosenthaler Platz: U8
Antiquariat am Hermannplatz
The tiny family-run shop next-door sells Pokemon figures and other cheap household items. This is working-class Neukölln. You may think that's a bad sign for something as "intellectual" as a second-hand bookshop, but you'd be wrong. The Antiquariat am Hermannplatz actually does great business selling old books, magazines, maps and paintings to locals. All items are catalogued and lovingly displayed, and the shop owner is friendly and knowledgeable - so don't hesitate to ask if you've got a question, no matter what it may be!
Address: Hobrechtstraße 14 Neukölln Berlin 12047

Bücherhalle
This second-hand bookseller on Schöneberg's Hauptstraße could be described as a discount retailer for recycled literature. The huge room contains thousands of paperbacks and hardbacks from all across the literary spectrum. The extremely competitive prices will make you forget the grumpy face of the owner standing behind the counter.
Address: Hauptstraße 154 Schöneberg Berlin 10827

Fair Exchange
All four walls are covered by bookshelves packed with second hand books - mostly English, but also some in French. Stepladders allow you to reach the books high up at ceiling level. The wooden floorboards and old, tiled stove in the corner complete the picture of this paradise for bookworms. The range of books covers almost every topic under the sun, from cinema and theatre to philosophy and sociology. There is a wide selection of fiction, as well as countless dictionaries and encyclopedias. And as the name suggests, prices are fair and you can trade books in.

Faster, Pussycat!
Descending the staircase into this second hand shop is pretty wierd, but the further in you get, the wierder things become. Passing shelves lined with multi-coloured wigs, cupboards full of original thirties clothes and rooms dedicated to plastic furniture, telephones and sixties bubble lamps, this place typifies that sort of craziness which you'll only ever find in Berlin. Named after a 1966 film by Russ Meyer, Faster Pussycat has a second branch called Tenderloin in eastern Berlin.

Anyone can sell clothes here on commission: if the clothes are sold within two months, you'll make a profit, if not, you'll have to take them back. 1. Flohmarkt Hittfelder Mühle
The flea market at Hittfeld Mill takes place on Sundays from noon-5pm, which makes it one of the shortest in the greater Hamburg area. Traders can drive their cars onto the grounds and the stalls here are not expensive. Customers haggle over clothes, china, records, jumble, paintings and appliances of all kinds. There are also sweet or tasty snacks available. The actual Hittfeld Mill is worth a visit during daytime as well as at night—there is a discotheque under its roof. Free admission.

2. Flohmarkt Sternschanze
A flea market with a slightly alternative touch takes place at Sternschanze station on a regular basis. It is mainly flatmates living in shared appartments who try to sell all the things which just took up space at home - like old crockery, books on esoterics and clothes which have become too tight. But there are also real little treasures to be found in many a cardboard box. In addition to the private traders there are professionals with new products. All in all the market has just the right size for a little weekend walk, and the low prices will deifinitely make a visit worth your while.

3. Flohmarkt am Fischmarkt
From time to time you can now also purchase old and used things near the fish market. This fleamarket is particularly popular with children, because on these occasions the schoolyard at Carsten-Reeder-Straße turns into a lively bazaar, and the classrooms remain closed. Lots of knick-knacks and jumble can be found on the tables, but bargain hunters can certainly also make a find here. And the emphasis with markets like this one is on socialising, anyway, which seems to work well. Please call for the next market dates or check the local papers for announcements.

Opening hours: 8am-4pm Sat

4. Flohmarkt am Museum der Arbeit
Jumble and culture meet here from June to October. There is a different motto for each market, and each is presented by artists such as bands and dancers. In the past, there has been a market where a combo from Brazil accompanied the haggling with samba sounds all day long, and at another market, groups of people in Medieval costumes mingled with the visitors. There are nice things on display: no professional traders but lots of nice furniture and lamps. The other stalls with all kinds of jumble and appliances sell their stock at fair prices. A special antiques market takes place inside the hall.
Address: Maurienstraße 19 Barmbek Hamburg 22305
Opening hours: 8am-5pm Sun

Neighbourhood: Barmbek
5. Flohmarkt am Schlachthof
Every Saturday this market offers everything expected at a real old-fashioned flea market - deco items, appliances, toys, and all kinds of jumble. The "Marktkultur" company keeps an eye out so that no professional traders with new products can sell their goods here in the nice scenery of the old slaughterhouses. There can be few traders this week and many next time, it all depends on the weather. So once you have been through all your cupboards and closets you can easily carry the sorted-out things to the market and get some money out of them. Advance booking and reservation is not necessary.

6. Großneumarkt
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning a market with lots of food and flowers is held here. In the old days, this square formed the centre of the 'Gänge' (lanes) district - parades, meetings and theatre performances were regular features here. Today, not much of the former market and its buildings remains, but the Pelican Chemist, dating from 1696 (No. 37) was in 1931 carefully restored to its former glory.

Thanks to the bridge, dry shopping is guaranteed while you look through the extensive variety of fresh international fruit, vegetables, meat, spices, cheese and fish. Among the usual jumble of books, comics, records, clothes, china, furniture, paintings, appliances and collectors' items, there are a lot of very original pieces and the odd valuable treasure. Genuine antiques are also available here. The market draws a mainly young crowd, who come here for a browse because of the nice atmosphere.

1. Alter Markt
In former times the Alter Markt (old market) used to be Kiel´s town centre. The large square in front of St. Nikolai church and the old Town Hall was completely destroyed in a Second World War bomb raid. The original road system - a cross formed by parallel roads with the market place in the middle - was preserved. The reconstruction of the old market square was realized with glass pavilions and shallow copper roofs, which were meant to resemble the historic buildings. But the people of Kiel never really liked this solution very much. The lowered middle part of the square can only be reached via ramps and staircases. In 1992 the square was slightly lifted and now appears to be more open.

The Flohmarkthalle Kln is right next to the Lupe 2 cinema, on Mauritiussteinweg.
As you enter the shop, you'll see it's not really a market hall, though the longer you look around you begin to notice that it's not small, either, with 300 square meters of space. For a moment it seems like it could be someone's home, with sofas and matching tables, the coffee service all set out. The music could encourage you to sit down and make yourself comfortable, but there's so much to see! Plates from the old days, book upon book, record players, records and CDs, kitchen furniture, clothes, pictures and, and, and.
The prices vary, though nearly everything is a deal. Glasses cost between two and five marks, and there are usually whole sets. A wonderful antique sofa costs (750 EUR), fridges for (50 EUR), a whole Sony stereo, in top condition, for (225 EUR).

People have fun trying on all sorts of funky clothes, especially the huge blond wigs. You can also find cool, slightly less extravagant secondhand clothes, like jackets, trousers and jeans, shoes and t-shirts. It's fair to say, everyone who shops here has something special in mind.

6. N & H Kleidermarkt
One of the largest secondhand shops in Cologne can be found on the Ehrenstraße. This shop is actually more about being trendy then finding less expensive, used clothing. They prefer not to be thought of as just a secondhand shop, as they also have quite a lot of new clothes for sale. Like at most secondhand shops, the merchandise is not security tagged, so you will be expected to check your bags at the counter. You might have to catch your breath when you see some of the prices - many of the used clothes cost as much as you would expect to pay for them brand new. Anyone who enjoys sorting through masses of clothes will feel right at home here.

7. Vintage and Rags
A different kind of second hand store - that is what this otherwise rather normal used-clothing shop calls itself. On three levels you can find used clothing from the US, as the large American flag unmistakably suggests. Along with the usual jackets, jeans, jumpers, t-shirts and other clothes, the decoration is notable: chandeliers in the entryway, a giant baroque-style mirror and two suits of armor on the first floor, where more fancy clothing can be found. The Peter Lindbergh supermodel calendar is taken page per page and framed. The changing booths remind you of the beach. Music, mostly house and tasteful techno set the mood while looking through the racks. They ask that you leave your bags at the counter.

2. Second-Hand-Shop der Vorwerker Werkstätten
Men, women and children can find really cool and super inexpensive clothes at the Vorwerker Homes second hand shop. This establishment serving the public good receives garment donations from the people of Lbeck, sees through these clothes and makes some repairs where necessary before the staff decide what can go into the shop. The best garments are on display here, and with a little luck you can find designer clothes by Calvin Klein, Boss or Jil Sander on the shelves here - usually at prices below (EUR 10). A real treasure trunk and a good deed, as well, because all the money made by the clothes sales serves to maintain the Vorwerk Homes.

Shop owner and antiquarian bookseller Eckard von Lingelsheim has been surrounded by some 20,000 books for thirty years now. You will immediately detect his excellent knowledge about and his affection for books when you talk to him. 1. 7. Himmel
Those who shop here need time and luck to find what they are looking for. The choice of 60s and 70s fashions is tremendous: everything from flowery shirts to platform shoes. Owner Solveig Zecher receives new (second-hand) stock every few weeks; new items by Pash and Bebop are also sold. If you do find what you're looking for, you'll quite literally be in seventh heaven!

This place sold fifties fashion in the eighties, sixties fashion in the nineties and is now selling seventies fashion - flares, glitzy glamour wear and other extravagant items at knock-down prices. Let's hope this shop keeps going! Designer pieces are sold alongside cheapo products from yesteryear. All kinds of accessories are sold, as too is the occasional art work. Something for everyone!

3. Elisae
Owners Susanne Westermair and Elisabeth Zimmel obviously know the fashion business very well, otherwise they would never have come across this impressive collection of second-hand designer fashion. The layout of the store is brilliant, the collection is put together well and sizes and prices can be found easily. Fashions by the likes of Feraud, Escada and Laurel are available, and even sizes up to 50 prove to be no problem. Elisae also specialises in traditional costumes and Hungarian dresses - a huge hit during the Oktoberfest.

The shop is crammed from top to toe with interesting bits and bobs; if fact, you could spend an eternity rummaging around.

5. Kleidermarkt
This branch of a well-known German second-hand store offers an extensive range of outdated stock, some original items from the seventies, as well as new and second-hand clothes. The styles vary from teenage fashions to classic adult wear. While it can hardly be beaten for price, Kleidermarkt doesn't offer the insider feeling and personal advice of a privately-run shop.

6. Muggenthaler
This small store in Frauenhoferstraße is so full of old clothes and other vintage goods that you could hardly swing a cat. Owner Elfriede Muggenthaler has been collecting antique bric-a-brac for the past 30 years at auctions and garage sales, and most of it is deposited here. The 1930s sequins are amazing, but be sure to bring lots of cash, as the price is steep.

7. Antiquariat J. Kitzinger
When you visit Kitzinger for the first time, you'll be astounded at the sheer amount of books which are stacked high in every corner of the shop. Most bookworms should be able to find something here, provided they are interested in literature, philosophy, history or art. The service is perfect - the sales staff are very clued up and will be able to find the book you're looking for in a matter of seconds. In spite of the extensive range, the prices here are a little higher than in many of the other second-hand book shops near the university, so it makes sense to shop around first.

Фленсбург
Weihnachtsmarkt
Like many other cities, Flensburg also provides its citizens with an atmospheric annual Christmas Market. Numerous stalls are spread along the pedestrian precinct all the way through town. Among them are many "Punsch" stalls selling the popular drink of hot red wine with seasonal spices which is just perfect on a cold winter day. They are very inviting for a stop and a chat. With a little luck you will come across one of Weinhaus Braasch´s stalls - their "Punsch" is particularly recommended. Other stalls sell snacks like fried sausage, but also arts and crafts, hand-knitted socks, candles and oranges to provide some vitamins. On Saturdays, there is a very popular stall offering a tasty pea soup.

There are plenty of bargains to be found here: second-hand clothes, household appliances, CDs and antique furniture are sold at hundreds of stalls. And with a bit of luck you may be able to find a genuine rarity, but it may well take a long time. But even if you don't, it's great fun to just rummage about on a Saturday morning.
