Come place a bet
The Avondale Jockey Club holds its monthly meet here. Exact times and dates vary. At those times you can take a punt or two, and have a quiet pint (or two), and admission is free. This is the home of the prestigious Avondale Cup, which is run annually. During summer the sports grounds within the racing track are used for touch rugby and cricket, and the bar is used frequently. Sunday mornings see the carpark turned into the Avondale markets--where thousands turn up weekly in the hope of finding some bargains. It is handily situated only 10 minutes from central Auckland.

Vibrant inner-city market
The market is set in the cobblestone courtyard adjacent to the 125-foot brick chimney of the former city Destructor--the furnace which burnt the city's rubbish in the early 1900s. The shops, cafes and restaurants are housed in the former workshops and stores, and the stables of the 90 garbage cart horses. The buildings were restored and the market developed in 1972. 1. Arts Centre Weekend Market
Vital arts and crafts market
Every weekend the people of Christchurch head for market day at the Arts Centre, to soak up its charm and relaxed atmosphere. In the summer, crowds swell to over 20,000. Alongside the many live performers, colourful stalls set up in the Market Square offer a dazzling variety of arts and crafts, from handmade candles to hammock chairs. There is also an International Food Fair, with stalls selling inexpensive food from Thailand to Lebanon. The market spills out onto Worcester Boulevard, where local artists and woodcarvers have their works on show along the Arts Centre's exterior walls.

Leftover from the past
Hedged in amongst the modern-day buildings of inner city Christchurch, just a few minutes stroll from the Square, stands the well-maintained, wooden Shand's Emporium building. Built in 1860, this unassuming but enchanting building is typical of the simple wooden structures that were first erected in colonial Christchurch. At one time a solicitor's office, the green-painted Shand's Emporium now contains several shops, including a delightful antique shop. Interesting photographs of the building in the early days, adorn the staircase walls.
